It's a wrap! a study of installations.

It's a wrap! a study of installations. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Students will ... * discover what an "installation" is in the art world. * make their own installation using chairs. * work on composition. * use drawing skills, especially contrast on fabric folds. MATERIALS * Viewfinders * 18" x 24" 80-lb. drawing paper * Charcoal charcoal, substance obtained by partial burning or carbonization (destructive distillation) of organic material. It is largely pure carbon. The entry of air during the carbonization process is controlled so that the organic material does not turn to ash, as in a , pastels and chalk * Erasers * Chairs * Old sheets * Scissors * Examples of installation artworks This article is about the software drawing application. For art objects, see work of art. ArtWorks is an advanced vector drawing package for RISC OS created by Computer Concepts (now Xara) in 1991. It has been developed by MW Software since 1996. During my third year of teaching junior/senior high students, Ibegan to notice areas of avoidance. On some subjects students do notwant to stop and study the problem at hand. Students do not alwaysrealize that everything in the composition is important, not just thearea they are most interested in rendering. One of my students'most common avoidances is drapery or folds. Even though the subject matter should not make a difference tostudents, it usually ends up being important to them. In the past, myfold or drapery assignments involved hanging cloth, clothing and stilllife using facial facial/facial/ (fashul) pertaining to or directed toward the face. facialadj.Relating to the face.facial, adj pertaining to the face. tissue. I needed, or rather, we all needed a freshapproach. I decided to use work by contemporary artists Christo andJeanne-Claude Christo (born Hristo Yavashev, Bulgarian: Христо Явашев) and Jeanne-Claude (born Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon) are a married couple who create environmental installation art. as role models. We studied a variety of their works suchas Running Fence (1972-76), Wrapped Walk Ways (1977-78), The Umbrellas(1984-91), Wrapped Trees (1967-98), and Over the River (in progress). Students filled out think sheets on the work of Christo andJeanne-Claude. Questions included: What is an installation? What is theartist trying to accomplish? In your opinion are installationsconsidered an art form? The following day, I had five to six chairs on site. Students werebroken into teams, each of which was asked to wrap a chair with tornsheets, "Christo and Jeanne-Claude style." Students had manydecisions about how much chair to leave showing, because there was anice contrast between the softness of the fabric and the hardness of thechair. We wrapped the chairs a week before the actual studio lesson wouldtake place so that they could be "installed" in the schoolcommons area for display. This was a successful attention-getter, and itbuilt curiosity within the general student body. After the chairs were viewed for a week, we brought them back tothe classroom and began three to four compositional thumbnail A miniature representation of a page or image that is used to identify a file by its contents. Clicking the thumbnail opens the file. Thumbnails are an option in file managers, such as Windows Explorer, and they are found in photo editing and graphics program to quickly browse multiple sketchesto use as a reference for the 18" x 24" finished drawing.Students were able to choose the color of paper and used chalk orcharcoal. It is always interesting to see what direction students decideto take. We benefited in many ways with the "wrapped chair"project. The art program became more visible to the student body andchallenged their ideas about art. The students learned about a new artform, installations, through Christo and Jeanne-Claude's work. Thebiggest benefit, however, is that the students no longer avoid folds. It's a wrap! Susan Buck Buckafter murder of his master, leads wolf pack. [Am.
