Although principally a cultural historian's work, Hellenicitytackles an issue that archaeologists have taken on in various parts ofthe world (cf. DE CORSE passim PASSIM - A simulation language based on Pascal.["PASSIM: A Discrete-Event Simulation Package for Pascal", D.H Uyeno et al, Simulation 35(6):183-190 (Dec 1980)]. in `Africa', below). Along withother sources of evidence, the author does appraise archaeologicalarguments for identifying Dorians and others for the earlier phase ofhis history. His field of reference is wide, ranging from social theoryto archaeological methodology (Kossina, Childe, Renfrew etc.) andanalogies, including S. Jones' work on ethnicity. See tooROHRBACKER, below. The Greek world has been overhauled thoroughly. It includes a newchapter on Argos, and the one on the Peloponnesian War has been muchrevised. Provision of illustrations has been enhanced--welcome, althoughthis substantial book would have benefitted from bigger pictures.
