If elected, Iwould ensure that all classroom teachers of Business Education had aforum to share ideas and resources in order to enhance student learningand achievement. I would also establish groups for teachers tocommunicate and network throughout the year particularly new teachers, teachers looking for "renewal," and retiring teachers. Itwould be my goal to continue to create programming at our Conventionthat supports the growth and reflects the needs of the current BusinessEducation classroom teachers (middle school, high school andpostsecondary). While classroom teachers are the direct link tostudents, teacher education institutions and supervisors of BusinessEducation are vital to the process of supporting student achievement.Without strong Business Education teacher preparation institutions, classroom instruction will cease to grow and our program will cease togrow. If elected, I will support the public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most efforts andpromotion of teacher preparation institutions and Business Education asa career field. Without strong Business Education supervisors, teacherswould not have the tools or support needed to be successful. BusinessEducation supervisors are the critical connection between the classroomteachers, teacher preparation institutions, and local governmentssupplying funding for programs. If elected, I will continue to supportmeans for Business Education supervisors to network and share ideas thatwill assist with program development in all states. Currently, I am a doctoral student in workforceeducation and am employed with the Office of the Provost at SouthernIllinois University, Carbondale. Our nation is at a pivotal point due tothe current economic times. Political leaders are pushing for workforcerestructuring as a result. Concurrently, we are experiencing globalcompetition in the labor market labor marketA place where labor is exchanged for wages; an LM is defined by geography, education and technical expertise, occupation, licensure or certification requirements, and job experience with jobs going to the lowest-payingwage countries. This is an exciting time to be involved in CTE and asmembers of ACTE! Continued research that leads to the training andpreparation of our workforce will allow our nation to provide qualityoutput to meet the global demand. ACTE is the strongest voice for careerand technical educators and this will provide a substantive andpromising future for our profession. As a former trainer, I understandthe importance of member retention and the need to recruit new members.ACTE's modification of waiving student fees is a perfect example ofthe leadership and mentoring direction that our organization needs toprovide for newcomers to the field. As educators in CTE, we need to beopen to teach students the importance of exploring all paths that leadto various career options. Our charge must be to act as one voice in thedevelopment of our workforce while encouraging collaboration between ourlegislators, corporations and educational institutions. This shocking statistic is a result of many complicated factors:spotty early childhood education that leaves a huge number of childrenunprepared for kindergarten; elementary and junior high schools thatadvance functionally illiterate students up to the next level; anoutmoded "chalkboard mentality" in our high schools thatleaves students feeling disengaged and bored with our often archaic waysof doing business. That said, if elected vice president of the FACSdivision, I would seek to expand ACTE's support for service-basedco-curricular activities such as FCCLA and SkillsUSA, which have beenproven to lower dropout (1) On magnetic media, a bit that has lost its strength due to a surface defect or recording malfunction. If the bit is in an audio or video file, it might be detected by the error correction circuitry and either corrected or not, but if not, it is often not noticed by the human rates and keep students involved. Along the samevein, research has shown that career counseling is a key; I would pushACTE to deepen its commitment to this field. Thirdly, I would advocatefor enriching alternative schools with structured CTE programs andproviding professional development for alternative schooladministrators. Lastly, I would encourage ACTE to expand the "BestPractices" offerings ' on its Web site, particularly theinnovative online CTE offerings available around the country. After 25 years in thecarpentry trade as a craftsman, I learned my true passion is sharing theskills I'd learned with future generations through technicaleducation, and now direct one of the largest apprenticeship programs inthe nation. Just as our country is impacted by such critical issues asglobalization globalizationProcess by which the experience of everyday life, marked by the diffusion of commodities and ideas, is becoming standardized around the world. Factors that have contributed to globalization include increasingly sophisticated communications and transportation , economy, NCLB NCLB No Child Left Behind (US education initiative), and technical advancement, so is CTE. Tothat end, we as educators must promote CTE in partnership as a viablesolution to address these issues. We must continue our commitment tointegrating the core areas of math, science, English and social studiesand advancing those areas through technical education. Federallegislation is now focusing on transferable skill levels andaccountability measures which further challenge CTE educators. If we areto meet today's demands of workforce readiness we must prepare forthe future by continuing to hone our skills and augment traditionalclassroom-based instruction. I ask your support in helping to lead ournation into the future by providing all students with the higher orderwork-readiness competencies demanded in today's global marketplace.
