Thewide margin of approval "is certainly an unmistakable and clearmandate for action," says Bret Lovejoy, ACTE's executivedirector. "Not only did we gain support for changing the name, butwe had the right name." The association began researching a possible name change four yearsago in response to members' concerns about negative perceptions ofthe term "vocational." Many parents, students and businesspeople continue to see "vocational" education as low-leveltraining for students who are not going to college, says ACTE'sPresident Laura Ward. "Educators have tried for years to change the perception ofthe word `vocational' but have failed," Ward says. "Manystate and student organizations had dropped `vocational' from theirtitles a long time ago.
